NGC 4216 is a large, bright spiral galaxy in the constellation Virgo. The galaxy is inclined, allowing us to see the nuclear bulge, spiral arms, and dust lanes inside the disk. NGC 4216 is a type Sb galaxy: its nucleus is relatively large and bright, and the well-defined arms are wound fairly tightly around the center of the galaxy.
This image has been computer enhanced to bring out the galaxyΓÇÖs structural detail. The stars appear blue-green; a dark ring is visible around the galaxyΓÇÖs disk. The diskΓÇÖs outer edges contain a great deal of dust, throughout which are interspersed stellar nurseries (red dots).
